Rolling course
The Eskimo Roll, or just the "roll" is near mythical in the paddling milieu. All kayak paddlers who talk with "non-paddlers" early on receive the question: Do you know the roll?
Some get very disappointed when I say that I have never used the roll on trips, only in training. And when I say the roll does not have much to do with padling trips, they often look strangely at me. But, that is my own honest opinion. That is not to say that you should not learn it. It is important for your continued development in sea kayaking, but you must remember that it does not work every the time.
The rolling course lasts for three hours. Those who know sculling from before easily manage it within that time.

Surf and tidal race
The Norwegian Paddeling Association has not defined a course about how to handle the surf or tidal races in a sea kayak.
The course has been created by Olly Sanders (Level5).
The instructor assess the participants and they venture into races they can manage. A lot depends on where the course is arranged. Previously, the course has been arranged at a beach in Nappstraumen towards Myrland, in Gimsøystraumen, on the underwater moraine at Delp, the tide race in Grunnførfjord and at Strømbrua in Svolvær. The training in tidal races have been done in Gimsøystraumen. The course is a lot about oar and boat control. It is good to have exercised bracing, sculling and rolls before the course.
From 2011 there will be a separate course on surf kayaking.
