Rowing and Sailing trips
The rowing and sailing boats we use are open boats built of wood in the traditional style. Some are built the traditional way: clinker-built in pine or spruce, and some using modern boatbuilding techniques: plywood (pine/spruce/birch/larch) and laminated scarves.
The trips sail around the Lofoten archipelago. Sometimes we cross open water to get from one island to another or over a fjord. But all the boats are built for waters of this type, and are suitable for all our activities. Most of the rowing and sailing boats are gigs, a French/English boat type which is used by organizations including the Atlantic Challenge educational programme in its activities. The 26-foot (7,9 m) boat can be used by 4 to 10 people at the oars, a helmsman as well as a lookout. The first boat is in the building berth, and will be completed by late 2010. Boats 2 to 6 will be complete before 2013. At the moment we are looking for sponsors for one or all boats.
The traditional boats we use are Nordland boats in different sizes from the "3-roring" for three pairs of rowers to the "fembøring" - 36 to 54 feet long. Jann Engstad is the largest private owner of the fembøring "Vågar" used by the Lofoten Folkehøgskole college during the school year.
